"what do you mean a monpoly"Actually the sidekick is not a monopoly. A monopoly is a company that has total control over what you buy. For instanc: Apple is probably one of the biggest monopolies out there today. They have it so set up to where you have a device of theirs, where you can't even fathom the thought of switching to another product. (ever tried switching from an ipod to a mp3 player?) Ever tried switching from dsl to dial up? You get it now? A monopoly is also a company that has total contro of what goes in to and out of their products. Do you find this valuable? |

I think you mean a closed device, kickitLX. It's hard to modify, and it's basically only going to do whatever T-Mobile chooses it to do. It's the opposite of open--closed. Then again, the iPhone isn't that much better, not counting the huge numbers of similar applications in the App Store. (Apple does reject some apps that appear to come too close to services they offer, so it's not open, just less closed than the Sidekick.)

Well, right the sidekick isn't. The sidekick is cool, but it's a revolution. In fact a lot of people in my middle school think it sux. SO obviously they could easily switch from a sidekick to a t mobile g1 or something.

They control what you put on that phone and what goes out of that phone. So yeah the sidekick is sorta half monopoly. Do you find this valuable? |

It's not a monopoly. A monopoly is when you have no choice whatsoever. If you could only have T-Mobile and could only have Sidekicks, it'd be a monopoly. The Sidekick is a closed device so it's hard to modify, but it's not a "monopoly". That's entirely different.

Besides, isn't a monopoly with a company, not a certain device? Do you find this valuable? |

"Yeah, I get what you're saying now. Besides, isn't a monopoly with a company, not a certain device? "Technically, a monopoly is when there's only one option for something. Usually, this would be a business, but picture a rural community with only ONE WELL, and that well happened to be on land owned by one citizen. That citizen could be said to hold a monopoly on the water supply in the community. (The simple answer would be to just dig another freaking well, but, it's an example I just made up.) Monopolies aren't necessarily bad. It's when the monopoly is abused that there's a problem. I live on an island and for decades there's only been one government-run (recently privatized) car ferry to and from the island. It's been operated in a reasonably fair and consistent way with dependable service, and there were few complaints despite it being a monopoly. Since it was privatized, there've been problems, but that's a different story. Do you find this valuable? |
