1) Do you have the data plan?
2) Has it worked prior to about a week ago?

For whatever reason, the data plan is required for text messages to trigger an alert. You can set a reminder for 2 minutes after to alert you.

Hello, it's a (semi-)smartphone. If you wanted something drop-dead simple, get a RAZR.

Calling should work just fine. The Sidekick is DESIGNED to work with the data plan, specifically because it backs up your data on the Sidekick data server instead of saving it locally. This way, if something happens to your Sidekick... such as, it gets wet, or stolen... when you get a new one, everything re-downloads immediately onto the new one. Do you find this valuable?

its still annoying that you need to have data just for the phone to go off when you get a text. or access an IM client. i already pay for my texts and Ims so why should i have to pay extra to get alerted to them?

Because you bought a smartphone and it's reliant on the data service. I'm not sure why this was set up this way, but that's how it does.

still, they certainly took a long time to tell people that a data plan IS required. we're on generation number what of sidekicks, and they bother to tell us earlier this year? i really wasted my money on my kick. I dont want data on my phone, i have no need for it. I bought it for the keyboard, not the internet. a little over a month after i bought my kick, i cancelled the data, as i found no use in it, and then it starts messing up. i talk to tmobile, and they they it requires data. and they changged the site to say that to. but i bought mine before it changed, and they wont refund me.

and its still stupid that you cant even use an IM client without data. I can use it on any other phone without data, and i pay for every month to, so the kick pretty much continued to waste my money.

they really need to fix its data dependency, cause as we've learned theyre unreliable with it. i can live without free ringtones and games and apps, but i dont see the need in paying for something i never use just for a phone to work. until they fix it tehy've lost me as a customer
