Sidekick 2 - Unlocked Questions
Jan 29 2008, 9:03 PM EST | Post edited: Jan 29 2008, 9:03 PM EST
Right, I've been looking online for hours and still don't know the answer to the follow - so if anyone could shed some light that would be great:

1. eBay are listing 'unlocked' Sidekick 2's from France, and I live in the UK. Do you think it's a fake or real auction?

2. I have heard that if I use a different SIM card then I can only use the Sidekick for calls and texts. That's not a problem, but I've also heard you will lose all the 'data' if the phone is restarted or switched off. What data will I actually lose? Does this include my stored contact numbers and received text messages?

Thanks.

As of right now T-mobile cannot unlock a Sidekick to use on any other network but T-Mobile. it is offered a lot in Europe where its parent company Dueche telekom is located. the sidekick uses a different connection for the internet called Danger (noticable when powering on teh device) and t-mobile saves taht data when your connected to that network with the feature exclusive to teh sidekick. and because no other carrier has that network relationship with Danger your data (contacts, ringtones downloaded, notes calander, to do's) wont actually save to teh device, all that is backed up on the server specificly for sidekicks with the data plan.
So you to answer your question directly, yes it will erase data (not nessecarily when the phone is powered off, but when the battery actually dies)

Thank you very much for your reply :)

So if I purchase one (which now with the information I have gathered seems unlikely) does that mean if I input all of my contacts into the device that eventually that means I will lose them all? And my text messages?

And what is the difference (in regards to data loss) between the phone powering off and the battery dying?

You dont lose anything that stored on teh SIM card (primarily stores sms texts and contacts, but usually only up to 30 sms and 250-500 contacts). You wont experience any data loss if you pwer off, device saves all info before it actually powers up, but if it powers off suddenly or battery dies, it doesnt save that info. so im guessing that teh UK doesnt have t-mobile service? 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Yes, there is T-Mobile in the UK but at the moment they only offer the T-Mobile Sidekick Slide handset, which I don't really like. I would prefer a Sidekick 2 and I am already with a different provider.

I am sure that my SIM card in the UK only stores 100 contacts and 10 SMS messages. In the UK most of us store our contacts and texts on the actual phone, not the SIM card.

So if we compare this Sidekick to a PC for instance, am I right in assuming that the Sidekick 2 will store my messages and contacts in some sort of RAM and once it has been reset (battery dies or it suddenly powers off) then that's when I will lose my data?

the short answer yes. all that info is backed up on teh network, but you actually have to be on teh t-mobile network in order to keep your data. to be completely honest i would advise against getting the phoen unless you were to actually have tmobile and the data plan for the device, otherwise it may not be worth the hassle IMO 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Thanks.

Do all the Sidekick models have this problem then? Or do any of them actually store information on the handset?

The Sidekick 3 has external memory, so does that phone had a facility to store information?

Its how the Sidekick's (all models) are designed. They were made to utilize the data feature to keep your info. the memory card is mostly used for storing pics and music. also the phone would erase your texts also but the LX has them backed up, the preivous models do not have that ability 1  out of 1 found this valuable.
