Another explanation on how to add themes to your Sidekick LX:

1. Plug your Sidekick into your computer using the USB cable.
2. Create a new folder on your Sidekick named Themes. It should be in the same window with the DCIM and Music folders.

3. Download a theme from SKThemer or skLXThemes and save it to your computer (NOT to your Sidekick)
4. Locate this file and right click on it and click Extract All..

5. You should be looking at the Extraction Wizard. Click Next
6. Click Browse and select the Themes folder on your Sidekick.

7. Click Next and watch the progress meter go as the theme is placed on your Sidekick.

8. When this is done, click Finish to exit the Extraction wizard.
9. Unplug your Sidekick and then select your new theme from the Backgrounds menu.
10. Repeat steps 3 through 8 for each theme.

The Text Messaging Splash Screen

To open the Text Messaging application, first press JUMP then roll the TRACKBALL until you highlight the Phone Messaging icon in the left-hand "ring" of applications. Press or roll the TRACKBALL right to open the second-level ring of applications, then highlight Text Messaging. The Text Messaging "splash" screen will appear on the right:

The splash screen shows all your unread text messages in the order received, with the message received most recently on top. Press the TRACKBALL to open the Text Messaging application and view the Browse Messages screen.

Note: Text messages are delivered via the "Short Message Service", also referred to simply as "SMS".

You can customize your Sidekick by downloading themes at the following sites:

Themes allow you to change the look and style of your sidekick 3 phone.

Normally a theme will allow you to change the background(s), the icons, the "bubbles" and hing sounds (sounds made when you open and close the phone).

There are a number of sites out there that allow you to upload themes you make or where you can download themes for free such as skthemer.com or sk3themes.com.

With the sk3 you can also change your keyguard (image displayed while locked) and your friend icons.

To learn how to create a hing sound, upload or create a theme, download and install a theme or anything else relating to themes you can read this how to section.

Ok so when i recieve text messages, my sidekick 2008 doesnt vibrate or ring. i set the sound to max and also set the tone for the texts... i also called t mobile and they told me to set the sound to buzz but it still doesnt work...help?

Check all youre settings, make sure your applied them and not just cloosed out, if you did everything right then it still doesnt work, you might have a messed up 08

the sidekick plan is not much more at all if you're an individual cause it goes from unlmted messaging for 15 to unlmted everything for 20... but i can see where it would make you mad if you have to pay 20 on top of 20...

Yea, the unlimited plan includes unlimited text for YOU...so if your on a family plan, you'd still have to pay 20 for unlimited text for the rest of people on plan.

thats simple in your phone you have a sound profile when you get a message under soft, normal, loud and maximum if you have it setup in your phone to vibrate then it will!!!! if not and you want it to vibrate EDIT YOUR SOUND PROFILES! in the jump forum press
MENU next go to SOUND PROFILES you should see a button that says EDIT and then you can figure it out from there. if you need anymore help let me know!

ok try this and let me know if it works! from the beginning! in the forum where you see all applications PRESS THE MENU BUTTON then go to SOUND PROFILE put your sound profile on SILENT all your rings & reminders (phone calls from calendar events, message alerts ( email, voice mail, text, im, im messages, system sounds sound have on X next to the speaker! now in that same window go to sound profile buzz (you dont need to press edit) everything should be x next to the speaker. next go to SOFT (here is where you press EDIT) MAKE SURE THAT FLASHING LIGHTS IS SELECTED, MAKE SURE VIBRATE IS SELECTED, THEN TEST YOUR PHONE WITH A TEXT MESSAGE AND SEE HOW THAT WORKS!!!

yes i do but sound has nothing to do with what plan you have check all your sound profiles and make sure that the vibrate button is selected what's your tmail address so we can get the messages to each other faster

i went to the T-Mobile store today and YES the plan does matter. they told me thats the problem i dont get notifycations. and once i get the plan everything will be working fine...another 20 bucks. no thank you.

I know how to resolve your problem. Call or go online with Tmobile. Add the sidekick plan. Once added you will be ask a few uploading questions from your sidekick. Complete the setup then text yourself. Your ringtone should work. Once it works, call Tmobile and cancel your sidekick plan. I did this lastnight within 30mins and it worked. Also, remember do not remove your battery from your phone at any time because your setting will reset. When your setting reset then you lose it all again. You will then to add your sidekick plan back on and off. (Just something i had to go through today)

I promise this really works. Add the plan, set your settings then call Tmobile and take the plan off. You will not be charged the $20 for the plan.

put a check mark over vibrate and set the ring volume to nothing.

then go to maxiumum and go to edit. change the ring volume to the highest.

thats correct. it doesnt work until you add the plan. if you want to keep the plan then go dont have to call back and cancel but most of us dont use the interenet or need it on our phones. So call back and cancel the plan. it works.

i do not the have the data plan and never did for this sidekick and my kick doesnt vibrate or ring when i first get a text. but i set my pending message alert to 2 minutes under sound settings so 2 minutes after i get the text it vibrates or rings.

well i dont have it working ether but all you need to do is get the update and to do that get the internet and then t-mobile knows your phone and they will send the update thats all if you dont believe think about it if you get the plan and the plan helps other people and what does the plan give you it gives you free txting and internet so i hope this helped you only need it to update the phone okay peace n19s

How to Create Your Own Background Theme

SHAY.

1. Plug your USB cable into your computer and Sidekick
2. On the computer browse to the Sidekick drive folders

open "My Computer" then select the Sidekick's drive

3. You will see two folders listed, make a new folder here, name it "themes" (without the quotes)
4. Open that "Themes" folder
5. In that folder make another new folder with your new theme name.

this is the name you want to appear on the Sidekick backgrounds menu

6. Open Windows Notepad and paste the following text into it

string Name(en_US) themename
bitmap ring-background ring-background.png
bitmap ring-folder-background ring-folder-background.png

Or you can use a pre-generated template from here.

7. Save this .txt file to your newly named folder as "theme.txt"

there are more things that can be added and modified, this is a simple start. You can find an entire theme.txt template for every sidekick model here.

8. Save the picture you want as the main background in this folder. (ring-background)

make sure the name of the file should match the Notepad text file string and should be in PNG or JPG format

sizing for backgrounds is commonly listed as 240x138 pixels, otherwise image may appear stretched. An entire list of assets and sizes can be found here

9. Add the second picture you want for the sub category background. (ring-folder-background)

this is the same size as the main background file.

10. The picture file names must match the text file exactly, I sometimes save in jpg format but still leave the .png in the text line and the background will not load.
11. Close the files, unplug your USB cable from the device.
12. On your Sidekick select Menu/Settings/Backgrounds and your new theme name should be listed below the original four. This is the name you set as the folder and in the text file.
13. Select the new theme and it applies.

In order to truly unlock your phone you will need to convince T-Mobile (haven't heard of anyone having success with that) or use a 3rd party service. You can unlock most models of the Sidekick. Hiptop3.com has found a reliable company that will do it for a small price. More info on this at How To Unlock Sidekick

After unlocking, the only features that would be usable on a network other than T-Mobile would be the phone itself (voice) and text messaging.

The data side is tied into the carrier the phone was created for so it wouldn't do you any good, you wouldn't be able to browse, download games, email or anything other than phone and text messaging.

7. Scroll to and select the tone.

8. To save, press the Done key.

NOTE: At this time, mp3 files cannot be used as a ringtone unless you are on Telstra (Sidekick MP3 Ringtones) in Australia.

Sidekick LX 2009: You are able to send free ringtones to your sidekick with the LX 2009 model. Email yourself an MP3 file that is 100kb or smaller in size. Once you receive the email on your device, scroll to the bottom and choose "Add to Ringtones" and presto, there ya go.

You can use this free ringtone editor to chop up your own mp3 files and email them directly to your sidekick.

Over-the-Air Updates-Sidekick LX

frailinIf you are waiting for your Over-the-Air update, or have already received it, read the questions and answers provided in this chapter.

How do I know when I have received an Over-the-Air update? When the update has completely downloaded to your device, this dialog box will appear:

If you select Update Now, your device will install the update and restart. Before the installation begins, read the instructions that appear on your screen:

What happens if I select "Update Now"? When you select Update Now, the device takes the new software it has received over the air and writes it to the flash memory. Flash is the persistent memory that is not lost in the event the battery dies. Note: Don't select this option if you are in the middle of an IM conversation, are writing an email, or entering data. In these cases you'll want to update In a Few Minutes, after you've finished your conversation, saved/sent your email, or have made sure any data you were entering has been saved to the service. When the update is writing to the flash memory, a progress bar appears on the screen:

It takes about five minutes to finish and restart; after which you will see the Update Complete! confirmation dialog box. Select OK to proceed.

Why might I want to update "In a Few Minutes"? To update, the device moves the new software into flash memory and restarts. If you are in the middle of an IM conversation or are writing an email, you might not want your device to restart, as your unsaved data will be lost. If you select In a Few Minutes, it gives you time to finish you conversation, send your message, or save it as a draft before the system restarts.
When will I get the update notice again, if I select "In a Few Minutes"? When you select In a Few Minutes, the dialog box will reappear the next time you come back/go to the Jump screen and two minutes have passed. The idea is, if you are in an application (not the Jump screen), you might be editing some unsaved data, writing an email, adding a task, and so on.

When will I get the update notice again if I choose "Remind Me Tomorrow"? You will see it again in 24 hours.

If I select "Update Now", what will happen? Will I lose all my data? Your data is safe throughout the update process. However, if you were entering data and were not connected to the service when you selected Update Now, then your unsaved data will be lost.

What happens if I soft reboot the device while the update is installing? The soft reset functionality is disabled during this step since a reset during a "write to flash" can corrupt the memory and cause your device to stop working.

What happens if I remove the battery while the update is installing? It is possible to corrupt the memory of the device if you remove the battery during a "write to flash". If this occurs, the device will end up in recovery mode and the "Sorry" screen will appear on your device. If this occurs you will need to call your operator's Customer Care number for assistance.

Does the battery on my device have to be at a certain level before I can start the update? If your battery level is below 20% when the update is downloaded to your device, you will receive a warning that you need to connect your charger to your device in order to complete the update.

As I was trying to start my update, I received an error message saying that my battery level was too low. What should I do? Connect your device to the battery charger to complete the update.

I am not near a charger, what can I do? Just select OK in the dialog box and connect your device to the charger when you can. The update will occur when you have enough charge to trigger it.

My friend received his update but I haven't received mine. Why not? Updates are metered through our system to prevent overload to the wireless network and our upgrade servers. Don't worry; you will soon get it.

(You need to have the Sidekick Data Plan in order to receive the OTA update or anything data related)

SnowBored hidden feature:

Press the Jump button to access the Jump screen.
Press the Menu button and select Settings, About Sidekick.
Press Menu + Shift + 8 at the same time at the credits screen to start the SnowBored game.
Pres Shift+F to make your trackball light up.

Erase and Change Sign-In Info:

Press the Jump button to go to the jump screen.
Press the Menu button to open up the menu, select Settings then System Info.
Press Menu + Shift + R all at the same time and a smaller screen will show.
If you wish to delete your saved sin-in info you can erase it by selecting Erase.
If you wish for it to stay the same press the Back button.

Erase Flash Settings:
