I'll tell you what will work on the Sidekick without the $19.99 data bundle:
Calls
Text messages
Non-network things like the camera and music player

What won't work:
Web browsing
Instant messaging
Picture messaging
E-mail
Downloads (ringtones, games, etc)

Also:
The phonebook WILL NOT BE SAVED if the power is cut (battery goes completely dead or gets taken out)
Other stuff like text message inbox will likewise not be saved

The Sidekick family of devices are tightly integrated into the network and perform periodic online backups to a secure system on T-Mobile's side. In the event that a Sidekick is broken or lost/stolen, and a replacement is purchased, the new Sidekick can download all the backed-up data and, poof, there's your address book and e-mails, just like nothing happened. This also happens if the Sidekick gets reset--all the info on it gets wiped, but it redownloads as soon as it connects to the network again. Taking the data service away shuts all that down and nothing gets saved if the power goes off.

Unless he's satisfied with this, or you can find $19.99 a month in the budget for the data bundle, get him something else because a Sidekick's a very expensive phone for just texting and calling. It's an integrated surfing and e-mail device as well.

Big screen, camera, flash, bluetooth, music player, video, and electronics are NOT cheap. North American consumers are just conditioned to expect rediculously under-market rates on phones in exchange for 2-year contracts.

"Well, I had the sk3 for a year and I just got my LX in the mail because I got an upgrade that cost me 390.00 freakin dollars but it was worth it . I love the larger screen and all the email accounts you can have on there. Also the resolution is awesome and it even came with a better memory card than the sk3 did. the LX is way lighter as well. The SK LX is MEGA hott!! I got the brown one because everyone had blue, hehe. OH yea you can charge the LX from the usb cable it comes with. What more can you ask for???"

Ringtone capability and video playback, among more text message and email storage. lol.
