The radio is the number one consumer of battery power. Listed below are a few ways you can save your battery power if you are unable to charge it overnight, as well as some facts about battery usage:
  • Adjust the configuration of your radio. If you will not be using the wireless functionality for a period of time, you can turn the internal radio off completely: from the Jump screen, press MENU Ways to Conserve Battery Power-Sidekick iD - Sidekick then select Airplane Mode > Turn Wireless Off.
  • Be careful how you carry your device. If you keep your device in a tight pocket, it is possible that one of the control buttons will be depressed. This will cause a small increase in power consumption, which will shorten your battery life.
  • The battery capacity will be lower when the temperature is lower. Specifically, when the temperature is 32 degrees Fahrenheit, the battery will have 20-30% less capacity.
  • When you are out of range of a base station your device will have a shorter standby time. This is caused by the radio's searching for a base station, which uses more power than if it were already registered with a base station and simply monitoring the paging channel. If you are going to be in an area or building that has no coverage for a few hours, you may want to turn off your device to conserve power.
  • If you won't be using your device for a period of time, turn it off to save the most power. You can leave your device turned off and not connected to the battery charger for approximately two days before the battery will completely discharge.
  • Key guard mode conserves power, but is less efficient than "off" since the screen displays the key guard image. To put your device into key guard, press and hold DONE Ways to Conserve Battery Power-Sidekick iD - Sidekick for two seconds. (To wake the device, press MENU Ways to Conserve Battery Power-Sidekick iD - Sidekick + DONE Ways to Conserve Battery Power-Sidekick iD - Sidekick .)
  • After the device has been in key guard for 30 minutes, it will go into sleep mode. You can select to have a small screensaver display or not. To conserve power, select not to display the screensaver during sleep. To select this option, from the Jump screen, press MENU Ways to Conserve Battery Power-Sidekick iD - Sidekick then select Settings > Battery & Display. Scroll down the screen and select the Turn off screensaver during sleep check box. If you select this option, then the TRACKBALL will blink green periodically.
