Conversations are one-on-one chat sessions you have with your online contacts. With Windows Live Messenger, you can have up to five online conversations going at the same time. To send a message to one of your contacts, follow the instructions below.
- From the Jump screen, select the Instant Messaging category. From the second-level Jump ring, select Windows Live Messenger. The Sign In screen appears.
- Sign in to Windows Live Messenger using the instructions in either:
- Signing In for the First Time
- Signing In After the First Time
- If your Contact List doesn't display, press DONE
until it appears.
- Scroll to highlight the email address of the contact with whom you want to have a conversation, then press the TRACKBALL. A conversation screen opens.
Tip: If you have a long Contact List, to find a contact's email address quickly, start typing the first few characters of the contact's email address and the auto-find feature will highlight the closest matching name.
- You use the lower pane of the conversation screen to type your messages.
Note: If you send a message and it appears in the top pane in italic, this indicates that you've been temporarily disconnected from the Windows Live Messenger service. You will be reconnected automatically as soon as possible, at which time your message will appear in regular font, not italic.
- To end a conversation, press MENU
then select End Conversation

Tip: If you want to end all your conversations at once, simply return to the Contact List screen, press
SHIFT + CANCEL

Conversation with Offline Contacts
You cannot start a conversation with an offline contact, but if you try to, you'll be given the opportunity to open an email compose screen and send them an email message.
