In order for Contact Alerts to work, you must enable these alerts from the Settings screen.

1. From the Contacts List screen, press MENU then select Settings. The Settings screen appears.
   
   
2. Look at the Play contact alerts group box.
   
   To turn on contact alerts, scroll to highlight the Play contact alerts check box, then press the TRACKBALL to select it. To turn off contact alerts, select the check box again to clear it.
   
   
   
3. Once you've enabled contact alerts, you can select different alert rings for the following events:
   
   
   • Contact Sign In Alert- Alert sounds when a contact signs in.
     
     
   • New Message Alert - Alert sounds when you receive a new instant message.
     
   To pick an alert, first select a ringtone "category" from the pop-up menu on the left, then select a corresponding "sound" from the submenus.
   
   

You can override these settings for individual contacts on the Edit contact screens.
