HELP! Sidekick 2008 with fido ???This is a featured page

Hi, I plan on buying a sidekick 2008 unlocked on eBay. I currently have a regular monthly plan with fido and I'd like to know whether I MUST take a data plan in order to use my sidekick properly (I dont care about web browsing, all I want to use is SMS and phone calls). Also, I heard that I could loose my contacts and all the saved stuff on the phone if I dont get a data plan. A little hand would be really thankful.
